This will remain the same and this will change

July 25, 2022 (last update: May 30, 2023)

In the new pension system, our pension will be more future-proof. Things need to change for this. The government had already decided that the state pension age would become higher, however it will start increasing less quickly. And the pension via your employer will be different.

However, some things within the pension system will also remain the same. Not everything has been worked out yet. This is what we already know:

What will change?

More information

  • You accrue a personal pension capital
The new scheme focuses on the contribution. You consequently accrue a personal capital, which is invested. The level of your pension benefit is consequently not fixed. How much you ultimately receive, depends, among other things, on the return on your capital. Your present scheme does not focus on the benefit.
  • Pensions will start fluctuating with the economy more
This means that your capital increases when the economy is doing well, however it can decrease when the economy is getting worse. Soon, the pension fund will have various options to ensure that the pension benefits do not fluctuate too much so that the pension of pensioners fluctuates as little as possible.
  • The partner’s pension changes (in case of demise before the pension date)
The level of the partner’s pension is now linked to the level of the attainable pension (we call this the old-age pension). You do not accrue this old-age pension on your entire salary, but on the salary that exceeds a certain amount (threshold amount or also called the pension deductible). This is because, in addition to your pension from us, you will also receive a state pension from the government. The link between the pension’s partner and the old-age pension will disappear in the new system in case of demise before the pension date. In that case the partner’s pension will then be determined as a percentage of the salary (hence, without taking a threshold amount into account).
  • The state pension age starts increasing less quickly
Your state pension benefit is the basic pension of the government. You receive this for the years that you lived in the Netherlands. The state pension age has increased in recent years. From 2025, this age will increase less quickly. Are you curious when you will start receiving your state pension? You can find this on the website of the Social Insurance Bank.
